Graytime

Illustration in graphite, colored digitally, 2012

Inspired by the son of a woman I was dating in 2012, Graytime was more of a “get back in the saddle” project for me. I hadn’t done any serious drawing, especially in digital format for years before this. Though I’m never completely happy with any of my works, this one being no exception, I do like how the detail and coloring came together. It was also a lot of fun to do!

I started this piece with traditional pencil on paper then took it to the company I worked for at the time (a photo developer for profession photographers) who scanned it in for me. After I got the scan results back, I realized I could’ve done just as well taking a picture of it with my digital SLR and some decent lighting. Oh, well. After it was digitized, I used primarily Photoshop to color it. It was interesting to try out different brushes, but in the end, I only really used one or two of the defaults.

There’s no real story behind this piece but with a lot of my works, I like to let the viewer create their own story if they wish. There are lots of small, hidden things to be discovered which is typical in most of my work. I’ve even rediscovered things in my drawings I’d forgotten about — see? Anyone can enjoy them!
